INTRODUCTION
An unusual combination: piracy and the Mafia. What two phenomena have in common that we usually mean as distant in time and space? This book reveals little-known events and meanings of both phenomena, showing how both are part of the same reality, and a greater understanding of how they can help us better understand the world today. With this unusual combination, and the story of historical events not found in our textbooks, the phenomenon of organized crime is demystified and shown what it really is.
This book, considering the historical sources and official implementing logical connections between eventi, prova l'esistenza di insospettabili analogie fra pirateria e mafia, persino nella struttura organizzativa.
Ad example, Cardinal Ernesto Ruffini of Palermo, after the attack Ciaculli (1963), wrote to the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Amleto Giovanni Cicognani that "the Mafia was an invention of the Communists to hit the DC and the multitudes of the Sicilian voted. " For some Members the Italian Mafia was "an exaggeration of the press."
Only in 1982, following the assassination of Pio La Torre and General Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, the law was passed La Torre (No. 646, OJ No. 253 of September 14, 1982) in which for the first time defined the crime of "association of mafia type."
that the existence of the phenomenon should be kept secret was the intention of those who had created. It is said that when the boss Lucky Luciano asked to name their organization, he responded: "No names, so this 'our thing' can not be called by anyone and we will be invisible."
With the exact definition of the offense of "criminal association", it became clear that the organization was destructive and harmful to civil society, and born of a refusal by the citizens.
The origins of the Mafia has become increasingly clear over the years: while in the past were being spread Sicilian origin of the phenomenon, it is now possible, going back to its early manifestations, understand that it was created to defend the interests and power, presumably from the beginning nineteenth century, a time when some English noblemen took possession of mines and territories in Sicily, and hired local staff in order to exercise the power of repression on the population to defend the usurped property.
The Mafia is often described by the media and television and film productions as an anthropological phenomenon. In Hollywood productions, such as in the movie The Godfather, the Mafia is presented as a kind of anthropological, even using a certain tone of voice and a determined fashion. This means a stereotype phenomenon by extracting it from actual historical context in which it was created.
The mafia, as this book demonstrates with copious documentation, testimony and studies, is an organization created "to c" to perform certain functions, and receive specific protections, without which there could exist. Wanting to turn into an "anthropological" or a phenomenon born from the bottom acts as a means to conceal the ruling oligarchy, and the methods it uses to continue to dominate.
addition to piracy and the Mafia, there are now other organizations that commit crimes, such as the Freemasons and the secret services. This book proves that all these systems are much closer between them than is commonly believed. Often, the Mafia, freemasonry and secret services have acted together to carry out criminal acts such as coups and repression in the blood.
Piracy turns out to be a true method of gaining power, so the war, namely through the use of force and crime. The phenomenon was strangely obscured in its truth, and treated as an argument rather than imaginative or adventurous as a historical phenomenon. Over the centuries, the images of pirates became more cloaked in mystery, ambiguity, romanticism or heroism. Books like "The Black Pirate" by Emilio Salgari presented the pirates as heroic figures, courageous and bold and exciting business. Many films about pirates are mostly to escape and entertainment, with spectacular action scenes and heroic.
Piracy therefore, also due to of the many film and literature, is a historical phenomenon little known in its truth and underestimated in its historical importance, as it was very marginal. This book proves the opposite: not only piracy has been a historical form of organized crime, but it has had great importance in the wars between European hegemonic.
Piracy is a test of how Western governments in the past used criminal methods to increase their power and to sow fear among the people. The Anglo-American research on piracy has led to the conclusion that 98% of Anglo-American pirates were former sailors of merchant ships or the Royal Navy, who took charge on behalf of those authorities which had worked previously. The difference was that a pirate had to attack and plunder enemy ships, bringing the authorities of the mainland part of the booty. The victims were not only the nationality of ships attacking, but also the coastal populations, very often looted, and victims of extortion and violence. Piracy was a terrible crime-phenomenon, which cost many thousands of lives and helped create an environment and a lifestyle marked by the moral degeneracy and debauchery, which produced misery and suffering. The rooms frequented by pirates were very similar to those of gangsters, where we drank a lot of alcohol and activities such as gambling and prostitution, seeking an illusory relief from misery. Piracy was to create a culture of violence and oppression. Often the victims were unarmed women and children, guilty only of living in cities attacked. The pirate who became the most powerful was the most sadistic, who had no qualms about torturing and killing. Piracy, rather than an adventure story, a story of crime and power struggles.
the motherland, some pirates like Henry Morgan and Francis Drake, having committed heinous actions, were welcomed in the salons of high society, and were admired as heroes. In fact, they plundered and terrorized on behalf of Corona, were, as we would say today, "terrorists."
piracy still exists today and works for the same reasons why he acted in the past to steal wealth and undermine or control certain geographic areas.
This book offers a new approach to understanding the phenomenon of organized crime, highlighting disturbing issues, but without which one can not acquire a true understanding. Criminal organizations appear as part of the system, with the important task of spreading fear, commodification and death, matters of concern to maintain the current balance of power, and prevent the people a real cultural and moral emancipation.
If the Mafia is an organization based on illegal and criminal activities, it is clear that it could not exist without the ability to launder money or without escape the watchful eye of international secret services.
piracy, the gangs and secret organizations, the book covers the essentials to understand what a criminal organization, and how it can not be considered detached from the power system.
The work also addresses the problem of how to destroy criminal organizations to build a future of peace, where the culture of the rule of law can prevail. Italy has a long tradition of struggle against the Mafia. Already in 1871, the judge denounced the collusion Tajani Diego State with the Mafia, and had he not been forced to resign would have brought to light the whole truth about the mafia, the mafia and destroying the iniquitous system that supports it. Other personalities of the judiciary, law enforcement, intellectuals, journalists and ordinary citizens have continued the fight against the Mafia. Even those mafiosi wanted to work together to destroy organized crime. In March 1973, the mafioso Leonardo Vitale decided to give himself freely to the police and to reveal the most amazing aspects of the history of the Cosa Nostra. The State responded by turning in a mental hospital. Twenty years later, Judge Falcone will take seriously the same revelations made by Tommaso Buscetta, starting una lotta efficace contro la mafia.
La mafia si può perseguire e si può distruggere, ma per farlo occorre necessariamente consider it in new ways, making it possible to understand the backwards and the destructiveness that it represents, and eliminating it will be possible only as a true moral, civil and economic.
