Alla luce delle direttive sovietiche e dei rapporti di forza tra le grandi potenze, le decisioni dei dirigenti comunisti italiani e le vicende del partito sono state rilette e ricostruite su basi nuove e realistiche, abbandonando l' impostazione apologetica prevalente nell' opera degli storici italiani.
