Stephen Jay Gould , nato nel 1941 a New York e scomparso nel 2002, è stato un insigne biologo e paleontologo. Ha insegnato ad Harvard e alla New York University. Come storico della scienza e divulgatore ha esercitato una profonda influenza. Le sue opere sono state tradotte in tutto il mondo.
Cresciuto in una famiglia ebrea del ceto medio, con genitori progressisti ed aperti, era agnostico e politicamente vicino alla sinistra radicale americana.
